Tooth Decay Treatment Bendigo

Tooth decay occurs when bacteria inside plaque produces acid from carbohydrates (e.g. glucose, sucrose) that slowly dissolves the tooth. This leaves behind a cavity, which needs to be cleaned and repaired with a filling as soon as possible, otherwise the bacteria will reach the nerve of the tooth and cause irreversible damage.

If tooth decay has only just started, it is at a stage which may be reversed through good oral hygiene, and products that contain fluoride or CPP-ACP. The top of the tooth is one of the most common areas for tooth decay, as plaque often becomes trapped in the grooves, and decay is formed (very common in children). Our dentists and therapists will often recommend preventative sealants in children to reduce the chance of tooth decay forming inside the grooves of their molars.
Tooth Decay
Another common area where tooth decay occurs is between teeth. It is especially important to floss between your teeth to prevent tooth decay, as your brush is unable to access these areas. Our dentists and therapists will often recommend different products you can try to clean in between your teeth, ranging from floss string, piksters, interdental brushes, and flosettes. Please discuss this the next time you visit so we can ensure the best way to keep all areas of your teeth as clean as possible.
Tooth Decay
Additionally, tooth decay frequently occurs along the roots of teeth, as the roots are not protected by the hard and strong enamel that the rest of the tooth possesses. It is important you do not brush too hard along the gumline, as this will cause your gums to recede and make your tooth more prone to decay since the roots are exposed. Receded gums are also a major cause of general sensitivity, especially to cold and hot drinks. Repairing the gums is very difficult, and therefore our dentists and therapists often recommend to focus on the prevention of this issue in the first place.
Tooth Decay
At Epsom Dental, we repair dental decay through the use of either composite (white) fillings or dental crowns. Please discuss with your dentist at your next visit which option would best suit your situation, so that your dental decay doesn’t get worse!
